Frequently Asked Questions

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a talk-based treatment approach to help people process the stresses, anxieties, and tensions in life. At the end of the day, psychotherapy is about change. In sessions, we discover and unpack beliefs and assumptions about yourself, others, and the world that are the basis for our unconscious patterns. Through these understandings, we work together to create change.

I'm nervous to start psychotherapy. What can I expect?

Feeling nervous is totally normal! Starting therapy can be a very vulnerable process, but it is my goal to create a safe and supportive space. In the first session, we will discuss what has brought you in to therapy, what life looks like for you at the current moment, and what you are hoping to get out of therapy. Throughout the process, we work collaboratively to explore and understand your internal workings while making space for change.

Is psychotherapy confidential?

What we talk about in therapy remains confidential. This means I don't tell your friends, family, doctors, or workplaces about what we discuss. However, there are limits to this including if:

  1. You inform me of a person under the age of 18 or an elderly person in long term care is being abused

  2. You tell me that you are at imminent risk of hurting yourself or another person

  3. You tell me there is a healthcare practitioner who is abusing you

  4. I receive a court order for my notes

  5. You become sick or incapacitated and I have to notify your relatives, family members, or emergency contact

If these topics or situations ever arise, it is my ethical and legal obligation to report the events to the appropriate organizations. I will do my best to include you as much as I can in these conversations.

How long are sessions? How many sessions will I need and how frequently should I come?

Sessions are 50 minutes in length per appointment. The overall duration of therapy can depend greatly on individual needs. Some people find some relief after 2-3 sessions, while others find long term therapy more helpful. Usually, people find the most benefit from coming to therapy on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. This allows for us to develop a working relationship and to help practice and fine tune the changes we're moving towards. However, frequency and duration of therapy can be flexible! I'm happy to create a plan that you feel comfortable with.

How do I know if you're the right therapist for me?

Great question! The relationship between client and therapist, or the "therapeutic relationship", is the foundation of therapy. Without a strong relationship, therapy can be less effective. It is so important to feel comfortable talking about difficult things (and also exciting things!) with your therapist. A good relationship is one where you feel supported, understood, not judged, and welcomed into the space. You should feel that your therapist has your best interests at the forefront, even if they are pushing you out of your comfort zone. In my work, I meet my clients where they are at and make space for non-judgemental exploration of their inner world. As a therapist, I believe that you are the expert in your life and you will always know it better than I will, so I welcome an open dialogue throughout therapy. I hope to create a collaborative space where you can feel comfortable to tell me if something isn't working the way you want it to, if you feel I've missed the mark somewhere, or if you would like to draw attention to different parts of your experience. This is ultimately your journey!

What methods of payment are accepted?

Payments can be made by either e-transfer or credit card.

Is psychotherapy covered by insurance?

Many extended insurance providers cover some of the cost of psychotherapy. Following each session, you will receive a receipt indicating that you received therapy from a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). Please check if your insurance provider accepts services from a Registered Psychotherapist prior to a first session to ensure coverage.
